There are thousands of people who join social networking sites with nothing else in mind except having fun and keeping up with their friends. But there are just as many people today who have realized what a powerful marketing tool these social sites can be.
Today I thought I would share with you a few ideas on how to use these sites to help your business.
1. Start your own group. For example if you look at Facebook there are groups for various things such as products, celebrities, and businesses. People can join your group and become a fan on it.
2. Join a small number of social networking sites and use those to develop your own online identity. You can make the mistake of joining too many sites and not getting any benefit out of any of them.
Just join a few of the most popular like Facebook and Twitter. You can then concentrate your efforts and see by trial and error what works the best for gaining traffic to your website. Also by getting to know people on a more personal level they are not going to be just looking at a web page anymore. They will say lets see what Johnny or George has on their site for me today.
3. Spend as much time as necessary creating your online profile. For example with Twitter you get to choose a screen name. One thing you can do is choose a name that draws attention to the type of business you are in. If your goal is to brand yourself then use your name and a quality picture that is memorable.
If you are trying to brand a product then you need to customize it, making it appear more personal to your market. In the long run, the extra time you spend customizing your profile, screen name and products will increase your click through rate to your sites.
These are just a few ways to use Twitter and all the other social networking sites. Your best tool is going to be your imagination. Think about a course of action and then go for it. If it doesn’t work then try something else. Good luck to you, Tim Stokes.

You make a good argument here for joining a few good social sites. There are people who say they have made a lot of sales through these sites and I agree that they are a great extra to your marketing provided one doesn’t get carried away & spend hours on them.

I agree that you need to focus rather than spread yourself too thinly. Also, bear in mind that the ultimate aim is customers, not just traffic. If you end up spending all day generating traffic and no sales you need to change your game plan.
I agree with not spreading yourself too thin. I think one of the problems a lot of people make is trying to do everything, rather than a few things really well.
Tim,
Interesting thoughts on social networking. I would have to agree that targeting one or two sites would be the best strategy since it does require a certain amount of time and effort to get your followers’ interest and trust to begin delivering some subtle sales pitches. With so many other alternatives to delivering traffic to your website, social networking can’t be too time consuming, yet it can not be totally ignored either as an effective tool.

Just what I have been looking for Tim. I have been considering FaceBook and had no clue how you could promote your business. Wish I had this information before I set up my Twitter username.
Great post

Hi Tim,
You have given some very good advice there which is much appreciated.
I made the mistake of joining too many sites but now concentrate on quality not quantity with three or four sites only.
thanks for sharing,
Mal.
Some good reasons for social networking and also for going for quality rather than quantity. This convinces me to join Facebook.
Hey Tim,
Great article. Social networking can be a great way to market a business and bring awareness about it, or even you. I agree that you should focus on only several, otherwise you could spend too much time and not get anywhere. The idea of starting a group is excellent, especially for Facebook. This is an approach I’ve been wanting to do for some time now, but haven’t gotten around to it yet. Thanks for the reminder!
Cheers,
Alan
