Choosing keywords for your website can be a very tedious task.  But it’s something that has to be done if you are going to become a successful earning affiliate.  Today we are going to talk about keywords and why they are so important to us as affiliate marketers.

First of all, what are keywords?  Keywords are what we type into the search engines to find a topic or a product we are looking for.  So for instance let’s say you are looking for information about boating.  You type boating into a search engine and a list about boating is shown.  Boating being the keyword in this case has brought you several different sites on this topic.

But how did the search engines know what sites to show?  It’s because all of the sites you see come up have had their web pages optimized for that particular keyword.  That means the company chose boating as a keyword then edited their site html tags and titles with this keyword.  The search engine then placed the websites in order by the value they have given to that particular website.  I’ll have more on that topic in a later post.

Choosing keywords for your website is something you need to pay careful attention to.  If you are new to internet marketing and have just got your website up and running, you want to choose a keyword that is relative to the content of your page and does not have a lot of competition.  Your goal is to get your website on page one for your chosen keywords to gain some traffic.  Choose a long tail keyword of three or more words such as, “new age internet marketing”.

To assist you with your keyword selection Google has a great tool called Google Adwords.  It is free and offers a lot of valuable information.  Google Adwords will give you the number of searches per month, the amount of competition for that particular keyword as well as a list of alternative keywords.

Remember to do your research thoroughly, don’t just pick a keyword without seeing what the competition is doing.  Ask yourself, can I overtake that number one position.  If you think you can and your keyword has a good number of searches per month then go for it.  Choosing keywords for your website is the most important thing for you to do in order to gain website traffic.  So choose wisely and I hope you become the next affiliate earning success.
